The White Truffle Habitat in Istria: Soil, Water and the Mirna Valley
What peer-reviewed soil science and ecology say about why Istrian woods and river valleys produce Tuber magnatum.
02How we read the evidence
The strongest local evidence is pedological: comparing soils across the Motovun Forest showed that productive ground shares an alkaline reaction, moisture and very good drainage with aeration — neither dried-out nor waterlogged soil bears fruit. It was the first study to document the species’ sensitivity to a changed water regime within one forest.
The international frame confirms the same logic: a meta-study of 231 documented sites across southern and south-eastern Europe — three-quarters of them outside Piedmont — describes a soil envelope of roughly pH 6.4–8.7 with high macroporosity and carbonate-bearing sediments, naming Istria explicitly. These habitats form on ground shaped by floods and landslides, which is why river valleys and flysch foothills matter so much.
Croatian forestry literature records truffle collection as most intensive precisely in Istrian forests, and the county strategy names flysch terrain and river valleys in central and northern Istria as the most intensive area. Three independent layers — soil science, international synthesis, national and county practice — point the same way.
Vegetation now completes the stack: survey work along the lower Mirna documents the floodplain hardwood forests in two bands — narrow-leaved ash on the lowest, flooded sites, and mixed pedunculate oak, narrow-leaved ash, small-leaved elm and hornbeam on higher ground with high groundwater — including the oak and hornbeam genera on the scientifically established white-truffle host list. Like every other layer here, this study shows no individual site; it narrows what kind of ground can carry the species at all.
